Welcome back to Term 4! We hope everyone had a lovely break and is ready for another exciting term of learning. The Foundation students have jumped back into their routines, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence continue to grow. We are already seeing some fantastic progress, particularly in phonics, and there is lots to celebrate!
Our latest text-based unit has centred around Sad, the Dog by Sandy Fussell. As we explore this story together, we have been making predictions, building our knowledge, considering why an author might write a story, and making text-to-self and text-to-text connections. Alongside this, our Phonics Plus learning has introduced us to the sounds /sh/, /ch/ and /ng/. It is exciting to see students becoming more confident as they use their growing phonics knowledge to read and write!
We’ve been strengthening our number skills through revisiting “ten and some more”, practising addition with numbers up to 20, and beginning to investigate how we can share collections equally. We have even been exploring Australian currency, giving us opportunities to look more closely at the coins and notes we use in everyday life.
There is also something new happening across Foundation! We have introduced our SWPBS ERIC Token system, which celebrates students who consistently demonstrate positive behaviours from our Behaviour Matrix. Students are already very excited about earning their tokens and working towards spending them at the ERIC Token Shop. It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm this new system has generated as we continue to encourage positive choices and celebrate students who help make our school a great place to learn.
We have a busy exciting term ahead, full of opportunities to keep learning, growing and celebrating all the wonderful things our Foundation students can do. We can’t wait to see what Term 4 brings!

Welcome back to Term 4! We hope everyone had a lovely school holiday break and is feeling refreshed and ready for our final term of Year 1. It’s hard to believe we are already in our last term before heading off to Grade 2! We have lots of exciting learning and experiences planned as we continue to build on the skills, confidence and independence developed throughout the year.
As the weather warms up, we are reminding students to be SunSmart by wearing their school hats when outdoors and bringing a clearly labelled drink bottle each day to stay hydrated.
We recently enjoyed our excursion to Scienceworks, which linked beautifully with our STEM unit this term. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to explore, investigate and make connections to the concepts we have been learning about in the classroom.
This term, we will be introducing Kinect Performing Arts, an Australian school-based performing arts provider. Students will participate in weekly, curriculum-aligned dance and movement classes designed to build their confidence, coordination and creativity. These sessions will replace our usual Friday movement sessions for most of the term, giving students a fun opportunity to learn new skills and express themselves through movement.
We’ve also introduced our new school-wide ERIC Token System!Students can earn tokens by making positive choices and consistently demonstrating behaviours from our Positive Behaviour Matrix. They can then spend their tokens at the ERIC Token Shop. We look forward to celebrating and rewarding the positive choices our students make each day!
Finally, a reminder that the Melbourne Cup long weekend is coming up, providing a lovely opportunity for a little rest and relaxation before we get back into our learning.
We are looking forward to a wonderful final term together, filled with learning, creativity and opportunities for our students to shine. We can’t wait to see how much they grow and achieve as they prepare for the exciting transition into Grade 2!
Welcome back to Term 4! Term 4 is a very busy term with lots of exciting events and activities. We look forward to a lot of learning, growth and fun in our last term of Grade 2. The grade 2 team are very excited about our camp experience on Friday the 23rd of October. This will be a great opportunity to develop our collaboration skills and work together as a team while having fun and enjoying a different experience outside the normal school environment. We look forward to sharing how it went in our next update.
You may have heard some talk about the Eric Token system as well. Students have been earning these for following the behaviours on our Riverwalk Behaviour Matrix. These tokens can earn students a range of prizes as a reward for making good choices.
A reminder that this term is a sunsmart term. Students need to have a hat with them at school to wear during outside break times. We remind students to wear sunscreen at school on high UV days as well.
On Fridays, we will be working with Kinect Performing Arts to participate in weekly dance and movement classes. These sessions will be in place of our normal Friday movement sessions, so continue to wear the PE uniform on Fridays to engage in this activity. Students will be able to perform their awesome dance moves at the end of year performance!
In week 5 we have the Melbourne Cup Long weekend, in which students will not attend school on the Monday and Tuesday.

The Year 4 students have made a fantastic start to our final term of 2026! We are looking forward to another busy and exciting term filled with learning, new experiences and opportunities to celebrate the wonderful progress our students continue to make.
In Week 3, students took part in an engaging Democracy, Community and Me incursion, which brought Australian democracy to life in the classroom. Students explored the differences between rules and laws, learnt about the roles and responsibilities of the three levels of government, and discovered how decisions are made within our communities. They also had the opportunity to stand for election in a mock classroom council, learning about preferential voting and absolute majorities. The experience concluded with an exciting council meeting role-play, where students stepped into the shoes of councillors and community members to debate local issues, share their ideas and make decisions together. It was a wonderful opportunity to develop students’ understanding of democracy, active citizenship and the importance of having a voice in our community.
As we settle into Term 4, students will continue to approach their learning with curiosity, resilience and enthusiasm. Through our Wellbeing unit, we will be collaboratively exploring goal setting and developing positive habits to support our learning and wellbeing. Students will be encouraged to support and help one another, celebrate each other’s successes and work together to overcome challenges. We look forward to seeing our Year 4 students continue to grow in confidence, strengthen friendships and make the most of their final term together!

At home: Practise playing rhythms at home and teaching their family about the different instruments.
Year 1: Students have been learning social and folk dances, with children learning and dancing the heel and toe dance and chicken dance in class. They have also practiced their sequencing skills with making an instructional poster for the chicken dance.
At home: Students are welcome to teach a family member their new moves.
Year 2: This week Year 2 students have been learning tuned percussion. We have explored Glockenspiel and Xylophones. Students know how to hold their mallets correctly and how to play simple rhythms.
At home: Students can teach their families the difference between tuned and untuned percussion or the difference between a Xylophone and a Glockenspiel.
Year 3: Students are working on becoming familiar with the elements of drama while exploring the skill of Improvisation. Working in pairs, students are using these skills to create their own news program set in a fairytale kingdom, with the current focus on presenting a weather report.
At home: Students are welcome to explore fairytale story books to help broaden their knowledge of fairytales.
Year 4: This term has begun with a focus on music theory. However they are moving from learning to read music last term to testing those skills on keyboard this term. Students are learning the correct playing technique through practicing different songs including Ode to Joy and Happy Birthday.
At home: Students can listen to different songs and practice tapping out the rhythm.
Year 5: Term 4 is an exciting one for Year 5 students as they get to become guitar heroes. The last three weeks they’ve learnt how to correctly hold a guitar, how to strum and how to play an E minor, G and C chord. There is also a focus on using the guitars to help understand pitch better.
At home: Students can practice where their fingers need to sit on imaginary guitar frets.
Year 6: Year 6’s are starting to map out their songs for their Ensemble Unit. Each student has picked from Bass, Guitar, Drums, Keyboard and Vocals and are starting to learn their individual parts. They are experimenting with working in a band and rehearsal techniques for their chosen instrument.
At home: They can practise their part if they have an instrument at home or learn their part by watching the dedicated videos given to them in class.

Foundation: Students have been learning how to describe objects and materials – we have learnt to use colour, shape, size and flexibility.
At home: Select a few different objects and ask your child to describe them. You can use the prompts: What colour is it? What shape is it? What size is it? (big, small, tiny, giant, huge) Is it flexible? (can it bend?)
Year 1: In Year One, students have been exploring chemical sciences with a focus on materials and how they can be used in different ways. The last couple of weeks
students have been designing tables made from found objects in the classroom to test the strength and flexibility of certain materials.
At home: Ask your child about objects from home made from different materials. Which ones are the strongest? How long will they last? What could break them?
Year 2: In Year Two we are exploring Chemical Science, physical changes in materials. We are developing the understanding that objects can be physically changed in multiple ways. To do this, we have been bending, twisting, stretching and ripping materials such as pipecleaners, metal, paper and wool. We are experimenting with what shapes or folds make materials stronger or more durable to pressure.
At home: Make a creation out of recycled materials or pipecleaners. Try to manipulate the materials in a variety of ways, such as bending, stretching, twisting and folding. Which materials were the easiest to create with? Which were durable?
Year 3: Students have been learning about solids, liquids and gases. We have talked about their properties – solids have a fixed shape and can’t change their shape unless we physically do something to it, liquids can be poured and flow, gases are often invisible and don’t have a shape. We have also looked at different items and classified them into the categories solid, liquid and gas.
At home: Ask your child if your common cooking ingredients are solids or liquids – you might want to add in a few tricky items like honey, coffee or ice cream. Talk about how ice cream can be solid but if we leave it out it can then turn into a liquid.
Year 4: Year Four students have been exploring the properties of materials with a focus on vocabulary to describe materials and naming a range of material properties. Students have been listing properties of common objects found in the classroom and have moved onto comparing and contrasting objects.
At home: Find a common object at home and list as many properties as you can. Make a game of it and take turns until someone runs out of properties to say
Year 5: Year Five students have been extending their knowledge on the states of matter. We have been paying close attention to the properties of gases and learning that gas has mass and takes up space. We also talked about the fact that gases can be squashed and looked at air trapped in a syringe.
At home: If you have balloons at home ask your child to prove to you that gas has mass – this was done in an investigation in class. You can also quiz them on the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
Year 6: In Year Six, we are exploring reversible and irreversible change in chemical science. We are discussing everyday substances that can be changed by methods such as heating and cooling. For example, ice can change to water by heating, and water can change to ice by cooling. We are understanding how reversible changes link to recycling and how we can reuse materials through the recycling process.
At home: Discuss how cooking is an irreversible change to materials. Take the time to bake with your child and discuss the changes that have occurred to the products used.
Welcome. Our Year 6’s have now officially settled into their last term of primary school and have eight weeks left until they head off to high school.
Our students have been hard at work on The Magic Bon Bons text in English, which focuses on dialogue and hyperbole (ask your child what this is!). In the second half of the term they will be looking at information report writing using the mentor text Dragons of the World.
This term will see the students participating in numerous events and activities. We have the Kinect Dance Company starting with us this week, who will teach the students a dance routine for their graduation ceremony and end of year Christmas Concert. We have had visits from Walcom Ngarrwa and Werribee Secondary Colleges who have debriefed the students on what to expect from high school next year, as well as easing any anxieties they may have. Towards the end of the term, we will be heading off to Adventure Park as a way to celebrate their last year at primary school.
A quick uniform reminder: students are expected to wear the approved Riverwalk Primary School uniform, including school jumpers, jackets and, it being Term 4 with warmer weather, are required to wear their hats. Wearing the uniform correctly helps foster a strong sense of belonging and pride within our school community. Students may choose either the academic or sports uniform as their daily option. Families who need assistance accessing uniform items, including uniform vouchers, are warmly encouraged to reach out to the school office, all enquiries are treated with complete confidentiality.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Welcome back to Term 4! I hope everyone enjoyed the break and is ready for the final term of the school year.
Term 4 is always a busy and exciting time, providing opportunities to celebrate students’ learning and achievements while preparing for the year ahead. We have plenty planned across the school, and we look forward to sharing these experiences with our community.
Upcoming Events
Little Learners – 2027 Prep Transition
Our Little Learners program for our 2027 Prep students will begin in November. This is a great opportunity for our youngest learners to become familiar with Riverwalk, meet new faces and start getting ready for their transition to school. Further information about the program will be shared with families.
Year 2 Day Camp
Our Year 2 students will take part in a Day Camp at Lady Northcote, Glenmore, on Friday 23 October. Instead of the traditional school sleepover, the day camp will give students the opportunity to experience camp activities focused on teamwork, problem-solving, resilience and independence. . We look forward to hearing about their experiences.
Kinect 2 Dance – End-of-Year Concert
We’re excited to introduce our new Performing Arts program, Kinect 2 Dance, which will launch this week. Over seven weeks, students will explore movement, music and teamwork through a range of performing arts activities.
The program will finish with the Riverwalk Primary School End-of-Year Concert on Friday 11 December. Families will be invited to attend the concert free of charge and enjoy seeing our students share what they have been learning. More information will be shared closer to the event.
Student-Free Day – Monday 2 November
A reminder that the school will be closed to students on Monday 2 November for a student-free day. TeamKids will be operating on this day for families who require care. Please contact TeamKids directly for booking information.
2027 Enrolments
As we begin planning for 2027, we ask families to let the school know as soon as possible if their child will not be returning to Riverwalk next year. This information helps us plan our class structures and staffing for 2027.
Families who have a child starting Prep in 2027 and have not yet completed their enrolment are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
2027 Class Placements
Planning for next year’s classes is an important process, and we take considerable care to ensure classes support students’ learning, wellbeing and social development.
Given the size of our school, we are unable to accommodate individual parent requests for particular teachers, classes or friendship groups. Class placements are developed through a collaborative process involving teaching teams, specialist teachers, Education Support staff and the Principal Team.
A range of factors are considered, including students’ learning needs and strengths, gender balance, social relationships, behaviour and wellbeing, and opportunities to build new friendships and learning partnerships.
Our aim is to create balanced classes where all students feel supported, connected and ready to learn. While friendships are considered, placements are not based solely on friendship groups, as we also want students to develop relationships with a broader range of peers.
Thank you for your continued support of Riverwalk Primary School. We look forward to a busy and positive final term and celebrating the achievements of our students as we work towards the end of another school year.
Parent payments can be made online via Compass through course confirmations, or in person at the school office/reception. If you have any questions or need support with payment arrangements, please contact the office and we’ll be happy to help.
Uniform
School hats are now available for purchase at the school office for $20, and reading satchels are available for $17. All other uniform items can be purchased from Noone Rushfords in Werribee.
Student Late Arrivals
Students who arrive at school after 9:00am must present at administration before going to their Learning Group. This ensures that their attendance is marked accordingly and they receive a Welcome Pass to provide to their learning group Teacher when they arrive at class.
Early Pick Ups
If you need to pick your child up early from school, please let us know in advance by calling the office on 9742 9700 or sending us an email at riverwalk.ps@education.vic.gov.au
This helps us ensure your child is ready to leave when you arrive and minimises disruptions to learning.
To support a calm and focused learning environment, we will be avoiding PA announcements for early pick ups.
Please note:
Children cannot be called for early pick up during break times:
o 11:00am – 11:30am
o 1:30pm – 2:15pm
If you need to collect your child during these times, please contact the office ahead of time so they can be ready and waiting.
Parents who arrive during break times without letting us know in advance will need to wait until the break is over before their child can be collected, as we are unable to locate children out in the yard.
Student Absences
In order to meet legislative requirements, we must ensure that our attendance data, which is provided daily to the Department of Education and Training, is up-to-date and accurate. We ask all families for the same day notification of student absences via compass. Instructions on how to report your child as absent on compass have been attached to this post. If unsure or unable to submit via Compass please email riverwalkps@education.vic.gov.au or call 9742 9700.
All unexplained absences will automatically receive an SMS notification at 9.45am
daily reminding you to report your child’s absence.
Unexplained Student Absences
All student absences must be logged in Compass. If your child does have absences that are unexplained, they can be seen on your Compass Parent Portal. If you are unsure how to process these on your parent portal, please reach out to administration for assistance.
Road Safety Reminder
As we continue to prioritise the safety of our students and families, we would like to remind everyone to remain mindful of traffic and road safety around the school, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times.
Please remember that school zones in Victoria operate at reduced speed limits (typically 40km/h during designated times), and these limits are strictly enforced to protect our children. We ask all families and visitors to drive with caution, be alert for pedestrians, and avoid distractions when travelling through the school precinct.
We also encourage safe parking practices, including avoiding double parking, respecting no-standing zones, and ensuring driveways and crossings are kept clear at all times. Where possible, please consider parking a short distance away and walking to reduce congestion directly outside the school.
Students are reminded to use designated crossings and to always look both ways before crossing roads, even when using supervised areas.
By working together, we can ensure our school environment remains safe and welcoming for everyone. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and support.
