We are officially half way through Term 3! It has been fantastic to see our students engaging with new content and showing engagement through the use of their mini whiteboard routines. We still have a busy rest of the term ahead – Book Week Parade and Student-Led Conferences are in the coming weeks.
Over the past three weeks, our Foundation students have been exploring procedural texts through the book Bubbles in the Park. Students have been learning about when and why procedural texts are used, as well as identifying the important features of this text type. They have been developing their understanding of how to write clear, sequenced instructions and have had opportunities to create their own procedural texts.
Students have been consolidating their understanding of numbers through hands-on activities, including bundling sticks, using ten frames, and exploring part-part-whole relationships. We have also been exploring data collection by surveying our peers and creating simple graphs.
We are looking forward to our upcoming incursion – please go to Compass for payment and consent.
Thank you for your continued support!

It has been a wonderful few weeks for our Grade 5 students, with lots of opportunities to have fun, connect with others and celebrate our school community. We have certainly packed a lot into the past few weeks!
Our House Spirit Day was a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved, with students rotating through a range of fun activities that were planned and led by their peers. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm, teamwork and school spirit on display as students supported one another and embraced each activity.
We also enjoyed a very relaxed Comfy Clothes Day, where students were able to come to school in their favourite comfy clothes. This was followed by our Subjects Night, which was a wonderful evening for students and families to come together outside of the usual school day. There was plenty happening, with families getting involved in karaoke, ball sports, making chatterboxes and a range of other fun activities. It was fantastic to see so many families joining in, having fun and enjoying time together as a school community.
As we look ahead, we are excited to celebrate Book Week next week! We will be spending the week celebrating books, reading and our favourite characters, with the highlight being our Book Week Parade on Friday 28 August. We can’t wait to see the creativity and imagination that our Grade 5 students bring to their costumes!

Term 3 is more than halfway gone – time is flying!
This term, our Grade 6 students have been immersed in the wonderful novel The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. After finishing the novel, students have reflected on the story and explored the important themes within the text, including friendship, courage, hope, belonging and the importance of treating others with kindness and compassion. Students have also been analysing the different settings within the book, considering how the author uses descriptive language to help readers visualise the environments and understand how the characters experience them. To bring their learning to life, students have been designing and creating dioramas that represent an important setting from the story. This has provided a wonderful opportunity for students to combine their reading comprehension, creativity and attention to detail. We have been particularly impressed by the thoughtful discussions and creative ideas students have shared as they have explored the world of Ivan and his friends.
Last Friday, 14 August, our students enjoyed a fantastic House Spirit Day! Our student leaders did a wonderful job running a range of fun activities around the school, giving students the opportunity to show their house spirit while wearing their house colours. Activities included a Just Dance station, rocket launch building, the exciting Space Battle game and a school-wide scavenger hunt. It was wonderful to see so many students getting involved, working together and enthusiastically supporting their houses throughout the day!
A quick uniform reminder: students are expected to wear the approved Riverwalk Primary School uniform, including school jumpers, jackets and hats. Wearing the uniform helps foster a strong sense of belonging and pride in our school community. Students may wear either the academic or sports uniform as their daily option. Families who need assistance accessing uniform items, including uniform vouchers, are warmly encouraged to contact the school office. All enquiries will be treated confidentially.

Year 2: In Year Two, students have continued to explore the variety of forces that we use everyday. They have developed an understanding of forces such as gravity, friction, magnetism, push and pull. Students are designing and creating a toy that requires a force, such as push or pull. They have enjoyed drawing labelled diagrams of their toys and experimenting with building using a variety of materials.
At home: Students can identify toys at home that require forces to operate. They can classify them into push or pull and explore the mechanisms that help them to move.
Year 3: Year 3’s have been learning to make predictions by exploring what happens to ice when it is placed in different environments and heat is applied. Experiments focused on making ice melt quickly and then slowly. Students then summarised their results in a scientific report.
At home: Ask your child how they can use their hands to create heat through friction.
Year 4: Students have been exploring and understanding magnets and their forces. They have developed an understanding of how magnets attract, repel and have north and south poles through experimentation and recording their findings by creating labelled diagrams.
At home: Ask your child what happens when you try to force two magnetic north (blue) poles together.

At home: Spend a family night together making shadow puppets.
Year 6: Students have been developing an understanding of how electrical currents interact with conductors and insulators. They have used electrical circuits to test their predictions. Students have worked collaboratively to explore a variety of materials (wood, metal, plastic), classifying materials which are conductors or insulators. Students have begun to record their findings in a scientific report to help them consolidate their understanding.
At home: Discuss electricity and the responsibilities we have to keep ourselves safe around it. Together, investigate where we can see the use of insulators and conductors in our community.
It’s hard to believe we are already well into Term 3! The weeks continue to fly by, and there has already been so much happening across Riverwalk. Our students have been busy with their learning, while also enjoying a range of events, activities and opportunities beyond the classroom.
It has been wonderful to see our students continue to embrace the many opportunities available to them this term. From learning experiences and sporting events to special celebrations and community activities, there is always plenty happening across our school.
Bullying No Way Week
Riverwalk Primary School participated in Bullying No Way Week, with this year’s theme, “Small Acts, Big Impact.” Students explored how simple actions such as including others, showing kindness and speaking up can make a meaningful difference in creating a safe, inclusive community where everyone belongs. Through classroom discussions and activities, we continued to reinforce that bullying is everyone’s responsibility and that we all have a role to play in preventing and responding to bullying.
School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support
This year, we introduced School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) at Riverwalk as part of our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment for every student. As part of this work, we have recently simplified and updated our School-Wide Behaviour Matrix to make our expectations clear, consistent and easy for students to understand and apply across different areas of the school.
Science Week and Subjects Night
It has been another busy and exciting week at Riverwalk, with students participating in Science Week and our Subjects Night. Science Week provided students with opportunities to explore, investigate, question and discover, while Subjects Night gave families a wonderful opportunity to see and celebrate the learning taking place across our specialist and classroom programs. Thank you to our staff, students and families for attending these events.
Book Week
Next week, we will celebrate Book Week, with this year’s theme, “Symphony of Stories.” Throughout the week, students will enjoy a range of activities celebrating books, authors, characters and the joy of reading. We look forward to bringing the week to a special conclusion with our Book Parade on Friday 28 August.
2027 Student Numbers
Planning for the 2027 school year is already underway, with our leadership team beginning work on class structures, staffing and workforce planning.
To support this planning, we ask families to let us know as soon as possible if your child or children will not be returning to Riverwalk in 2027. Having accurate enrolment information early helps us plan classes, staffing and resources effectively and ensure we are well prepared for the year ahead.
Yard Supervision
A reminder to families that yard supervision begins at 8:45am each morning. Students arriving before 8:45am must be accompanied by an adult or booked into Team Kids.
In the afternoon, the Principal Team is on duty from 3:15pm–3:30pm. Students who are unable to be collected by 3:15pm must be booked into Team Kids.
Thank you for helping us ensure that all students are safely supervised before and after school.
Parking Reminder
A reminder to all families about being considerate of our neighbours when parking during school drop-off and pick-up times.
Please ensure that driveways, garages and access points are never blocked, even for a short period of time. We understand that drop-off and pick-up times can be busy and that parking can sometimes be challenging. However, it is important that we respect our neighbours and ensure they can safely access their homes and leave their properties when needed.
Thank you for your continued support of Riverwalk Primary School.
Parent payments can be made online via Compass through course confirmations, or in person at the school office/reception. If you have any questions or need support with payment arrangements, please contact the office and we’ll be happy to help.
Uniform
School hats are now available for purchase at the school office for $20, and reading satchels are available for $17. All other uniform items can be purchased from Noone Rushfords in Werribee.
Student Late Arrivals
Students who arrive at school after 9:00am must present at administration before going to their Learning Group. This ensures that their attendance is marked accordingly and they receive a Welcome Pass to provide to their learning group Teacher when they arrive at class.
Early Pick Ups
If you need to pick your child up early from school, please let us know in advance by calling the office on 9742 9700 or sending us an email at riverwalk.ps@education.vic.gov.au
This helps us ensure your child is ready to leave when you arrive and minimises disruptions to learning.
To support a calm and focused learning environment, we will be avoiding PA announcements for early pick ups.
Please note:
Children cannot be called for early pick up during break times:
o 11:00am – 11:30am
o 1:30pm – 2:15pm
If you need to collect your child during these times, please contact the office ahead of time so they can be ready and waiting.
Parents who arrive during break times without letting us know in advance will need to wait until the break is over before their child can be collected, as we are unable to locate children out in the yard.
Student Absences
In order to meet legislative requirements, we must ensure that our attendance data, which is provided daily to the Department of Education and Training, is up-to-date and accurate. We ask all families for the same day notification of student absences via compass. Instructions on how to report your child as absent on compass have been attached to this post. If unsure or unable to submit via Compass please email riverwalkps@education.vic.gov.au or call 9742 9700.
All unexplained absences will automatically receive an SMS notification at 9.45am
daily reminding you to report your child’s absence.
Unexplained Student Absences
All student absences must be logged in Compass. If your child does have absences that are unexplained, they can be seen on your Compass Parent Portal. If you are unsure how to process these on your parent portal, please reach out to administration for assistance.
Road Safety Reminder
As we continue to prioritise the safety of our students and families, we would like to remind everyone to remain mindful of traffic and road safety around the school, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times.
Please remember that school zones in Victoria operate at reduced speed limits (typically 40km/h during designated times), and these limits are strictly enforced to protect our children. We ask all families and visitors to drive with caution, be alert for pedestrians, and avoid distractions when travelling through the school precinct.
We also encourage safe parking practices, including avoiding double parking, respecting no-standing zones, and ensuring driveways and crossings are kept clear at all times. Where possible, please consider parking a short distance away and walking to reduce congestion directly outside the school.
Students are reminded to use designated crossings and to always look both ways before crossing roads, even when using supervised areas.
By working together, we can ensure our school environment remains safe and welcoming for everyone. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and support.
