Zones of Regulation

At Riverwalk Primary School ‘Zones of Regulation’ is explicitly taught to all students to develop their skills in regulating their emotions and actions. It is a conceptual framework that we use to support the development of self-regulation in our students. This approach is designed to help students recognise when they are in different states called ‘zones’, with each of the four zones represented by a different colour – blue, green, yellow and red. The tasks and activities teach students how to use strategies and tools to stay in a zones or move from one zones to another. Students explore calming techniques, cognitive strategies and sensory supports so they have a toolbox of methods to use between each zones.
